We help families shape their climate legacy.

At Mogote we believe in the power of multi-generational business as a unique force for social, economic, and environmental good.

What we do:

We are a boutique advisory firm that supports family offices and family owned businesses that want to transform their generational wealth and operational legacy into an engine for a regenerative future.

You can think of us as your fractional Chief Regeneration Office.

All industries across the globe are experiencing changes in how they account for the natural ecosystems and communities that they impact.

We filter out the noise, and help implement strategies that are tailored to a family business’ specific context and aspirations.

Mogote (Məˈgōtē):

Isolated, steep-sided hills found in Puerto Rico’s northern karst region which host complex ecological systems that nurture a diversity of vegetation types.

“Family businesses have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play a larger societal role by using their long-term, multi-generational mindset as a roadmap to sustainability for others to follow.”

- KPMG, Global Family Business Report, 2023

Why are family businesses critical for the regeneration of our planet?

Humanity’s most pressing issues will not be solved through short-termism and polarization.

In facing the many ecosystem challenges within our planetary boundaries - climate change, water scarcity, soil degradation, biodiversity loss, food system fragility, among others - we’re witnessing a paradigm shift towards regeneration.

More than ever before, we are expected to lead business, philanthropy and investment activities in alignment with living systems - both recognizing the role we play in affecting our natural ecosystems and proactively addressing those challenges head on.

Family businesses are uniquely well positioned to catalyze long-term systemic change given their values driven decision making, patient capital and focus on legacy.

It is estimated that family businesses contribute to more than half of the world’s total GDP and in the next two decades we’ll witness the largest transfer of wealth of approximately $80 trillion into the hands of a generation that is increasingly urging greater action towards systemic change.

Our Services

Environmental Stewardship Planning

Meaningful, long-term impact involves taking a holistic approach in building a coherent strategy for a family’s environmental legacy across all areas that touch on resource allocation - from estate and succession planning through to business operations, investments, philanthropy, governance, and more. We deep dive into the current structures for decision making, shed light on areas of opportunity, evaluate the complex trade offs, and implement a path that is in line with the family’s long-term vision.

Organizational Capacity Building

Implementing initiatives that are outside of the core businesses or day-to-day practices often requires tapping into internal team members with limited bandwidth, or the projects struggle to take off due to structural siloes and gaps in capabilities and resources. Having a dedicated external person who works closely with designated team members to accelerate efforts can be the catalyst needed to see tangible results.

Sustainability Portfolio Planning & Management

We own the oversight of all sustainability initiatives, from operations, governance, investments and philanthropic efforts, to measure progress and communicate performance to family office principals, board members and key executives.

Diligence Investment and Philanthropic Opportunities

Guidance and advisory on the most reputable networks for both direct and fund investments, as well as philanthropic opportunities in the environmental ecosystem, in accordance with your family’s areas of commitment. We can conduct diligence and tap into subject matter experts to help inform key decisions and the allocation of family capital.

Workshop Facilitation & Advisory Roles

We offer strategy and facilitation of family retreats to shape future visions for environmental stewardship, as well as Advisory and/or Board of Directors participation to represent environmental interests.

What makes us unique?

We understand that every family is different.

We approach solutions creatively and flexibly, knowing the perspectives, interests, capacity, and objectives of the multiple stakeholders involved will vary.

We’ve held operational and advisory roles in family businesses and know that building trust is the first step in establishing an effective working dynamic.

The power of our network.

The solutions we implement require collaborations across industry and supply chain lines that are often blurred. And every day it becomes more and more challenging to stay up to date on the latest developments.

We bring in tailored resources tapped through our network for each assignment and also collaborate with a family’s existing network and advisors.

The problems we are aiming to solve require long-term views.

We are looking at how we can impact the world 5, 10, 15 to 20 years from now through the decisions we make today, without losing sight of the economic reality we live in.

We know how to think both short term and long term, with equal importance. This is what drives us.

We work solely on behalf of the family’s interest.

Under no circumstance do we obtain financial compensation for any referrals or investment opportunities that a family decides to pursue.

We serve as an objective, outside perspective that can both challenge and better inform decision making.

We drive GENERATIONAl,

Sustainable,

GROWTH.

Roxana Balzac Ruiz

Managing Partner

Roxana knows firsthand how to navigate the nuances of operationalizing strategic directives in a family business context. She brings forth her experience having led corporate strategy at Grupo Ferré Rangel, a fourth gen family office with a diversified conglomerate of businesses and investments in Puerto Rico and the United States, where she led processes of organizational transformation and built a direct investment arm designed in line with the interests of the next gen.

She’s currently a partner and fractional COO at Regenera Capital, which co-founded the first institutionally backed platform for rooftop solar, batteries and energy efficiency in Mexico, having raised $76 million from a US family office and a regional development bank. Roxana also sits on the board of a first-generation family run business that is pioneering a regenerative approach to organics management.

Through Mogote Family Advisory, Roxana serves families who are conscious that they have an important role to play in the climate transition, yet are struggling to make meaningful progress towards their goals and desired areas of impact. Roxana has a knack for recognizing misalignments that are blocking forward momentum, and skillfully navigating the often difficult conversations that come with managing intergenerational transitions. She’s proven to be a trusted, dedicated resource with the ability to build long lasting systems that can propel a family’s legacy.

Roxana began her career in New York leading business development in Latin America for Cleary Gottlieb, the #1 ranked international law firm in the region where she reported to the partners of the LatAm practice. She graduated from Barnard College, Columbia University and has continued her education in the field of regenerative economics through the Capital Institute as well as having obtained a certificate in circular economy from UC Berkeley Extension.
